The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Kansas (NAMI Kansas) partnered with Topeka Public Schools to host the annual NAMIWalks Kansas event, proudly sponsored by CareSource. The event took place on Saturday, May 20 at Topeka West High School, where Kansans from across the state gathered to raise funds and awareness for mental health needs.
S.J. Hazim, a well-known community connector and entrepreneur, served as the Honorary Chair for this year's event. Notable guest speakers included Mayor Michael Padilla and Damon Parker from The Jones Project.
With over 178 participants and 46 registered teams, NAMIWalks Kansas aimed to raise funds to support individuals in accessing mental health services, promote awareness, reduce stigma, build community and provide a sense of support.
Dr. Sherrie Vaughn, Executive Director of NAMI Kansas, highlighted the significance of taking that first step and the impact of NAMIWalks: "Through NAMIWalks' public, active display of support for people affected by mental illness, we are changing our communities and ensuring that help and hope are available for those in need."
CareSource, the premier sponsor of NAMIWalks, has deep commitment to mental health awareness and comprehensive care. Dr. Sandra Berg, Senior Director of Behavioral Health at CareSource, emphasized the importance of NAMI Kansas as an invaluable resource for navigating complex health care systems.
"Supporting NAMI is a way for us to ensure that everyone can receive the care and support they need to thrive, particularly individuals on Medicaid who often face additional barriers to accessing quality behavioral health care," said Dr. Berg.
The NAMI Walk event also featured local wellness and mental health resources, providing attendees with valuable information and support.
