ATHENS, Ohio (CARESOURCE) - There was plenty of pink around the Athens City pool Wednesday (October 2, 2024) where the 4th annual CareSource Brake for Breakfast event took place. CareSource worked with Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP) and Ohio Health for the drive-thru event.  It brought breast cancer screening awareness to Athens County.

“Overall, Brake for Breakfast was a huge success, with 240 attendees, 11 mammograms completed, 32 individuals receiving health education and 20 attendees agreeing to receive a mammogram scheduling follow-up,” said Diane Borton, director for community and retail partnerships at CareSource.  “I think this was our largest one ever. We are already looking forward to next year.”

Attendees were greeted by CareSource representatives who handed out flyers describing their benefits and how to take advantage of them. They also received a free breakfast and health information. The final stop along the drive-thru was in front of a mobile mammogram unit to learn more about when and how to receive a screening.

“Although the event’s main focus was breast cancer awareness, organizations such as HAPCAP and Southeast Ohio Food Bank were an important piece of the puzzle to address all barriers patients may face,” said Eva Bloom, the director of development for HAPCAP and the Southeast Ohio Food Bank.

“Often individuals experiencing poverty do not receive preventive care due to other factors such as lack of transportation,” added Bloom. “This highlights HAPCAP’s role at the event, as our table worked to provide holistic information to attendees about what resources are available to help address transportation, food insecurity, health care and more.”
