DAYTON, Ohio (CARESOURCE) - Even with Thursday’s (June 20, 2024) temperatures approaching triple digits it couldn’t stop CareSource and The Foodbank, Inc. from pulling off another successful food distribution event at the Montgomery County Fairground.

And this time they got an assist from the University of Dayton men’s basketball team, who helped out both by distributing food in the drive-thru and thrilling participants with some surprise hometown star power.

Altogether, more than 740 families received chicken, beans, potatoes, corn, peppers, fresh fruits, almonds and watermelon from 85 CareSource volunteers.

“We are always grateful for the chance to further support families in our community, especially with such great partners as CareSource and the Flyers,” said Michelle L. Riley, CEO of The Foodbank. “With this event, and the others we have planned this year, we’re increasing food security for our neighbors to strengthen the quality of life in our community.”

Today’s event marked the second of seven food distributions that CareSource and The Foodbank will do together through November. The next distribution is on August 1 in Preble County. Last year, the two organizations provided 7,200 local families more than 579,000 pounds of food.

“We are so grateful for the chance to partner with The Foodbank to support the health and well-being of our community,” said Jesse Reed, director of life services for CareSource. “Our work with The Foodbank dates back to 2013 and makes a difference for everyone involved.”

This food distribution was another in a series supporting Miami Valley communities with a high occurrences of food insecurity. They are in addition to The Foodbank’s Mobile Pantry program, which hosts distribution events across Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties each month.
