School Based Health Centers (SBHC)

What’s a SBHC?

SBHCs are medical clinics that offer healthcare services to students and staff. The clinics are either within the school or on school property. Primary care and/or specialty doctors are provided by the SBHC based on offered medical services.

They work with the school nurse to help children to stay healthy.

SBHC can help with:

  • Well-Child Exams
  • Sick Visits
  • Shots (Immunizations)
  • Dental Services
  • Vision Services
  • Mental Health Counseling
  • Alcohol & Drug Counseling
  • Vision and Hearing Tests
  • Behavioral Health Screening and Counseling
  • Lab Testing
  • Sports Physicals
  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute chronic illnesses and minor injuries. (This can be asthma, diabetes, sickle cell.)

*Medical Services differ based on places.*

Who can go?

SBHCs usually serve children and youth who are at the school. Some SBHCs serve students within the school district or county, teachers and staff at the school, and other community members.

  • STEP 1: If you are the parent or guardian of a student, contact the SBHC to ask for and fill out their consent form.
  • STEP 2: The SBHC will contact the parent or guardian to set up a visit. The opportunity will be given for the individual to be present at the time of the visit.
  • STEP 3: Proposed medical services by SBHC will be discussed with parent or guardian for notification purposes.
