Steve Smitherman, Regional Vice President, Midwest
Steve Smitherman is the Regional Vice President for the Midwest at CareSource, where he oversees health plans across Indiana, Arkansas, Michigan and Kentucky/West Virginia. With over 20 years of Medicaid and commercial health plan leadership experience, Steve brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to improving health care access and outcomes for vulnerable populations across the Midwest.
Steve has been with CareSource since 2012, where he first served as director of network development for the Indiana Market. During his tenure, he expertly managed provider relationships and led the contracting process for new business ventures in the state. His leadership helped establish CareSource as a prominent health care provider in Indiana, developing innovative programs such as the award-winning Re-Entry Program™, which supports individuals transitioning from incarceration back into the community.
In his previous role as President of CareSource Indiana, Steve spearheaded initiatives like the “Healthy Beginnings at Home” pilot program, which provides rental assistance, housing navigation and case management for pregnant women in Marion County. His proactive approach to health care delivery has made a significant impact on maternal and infant health in Indiana.
Steve serves on several boards, including Covering Kids & Families of Indiana, the Indiana Association of Health Plans and The Villages of Indiana, where he actively participates in committees focused on finance, advocacy and audit. A lifelong Hoosier, Steve is dedicated to giving back to his community through volunteer work with organizations like Wheeler Mission Ministries, Gleaners Food Bank and Indy Neighborlink.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.
